I celebrated this year by enjoying my right to sleep. Thanks for the Z's, guerilla expatriates. I had relatives on the Mayflower, and while the line I am descended from is not Puritan, we do enjoy our right to choose our own religion, and we thank men like George Washington (aliases Gee-Dub and Pimpington), Andrew Jackson (Andy Jack, the most badass of them all), Benjamin Franklin (how I like to count him), and Alexander Hamilton (historians now claim he was a British secret agent? Indeed, one of our founders was 007). The same gratitude goes out to the men alive today who still slap around the foreign governments who would seek to bring down our republic. Take pride in your work, because we take pride in our giant defense budget that insures our continuing freedoms. The other half of my blood is native only by one or two generations, so my collective family tree may not have bled so much to put roots here, but I'd like to think we all earn our rights one way or another. Taxes, planning the assassination of Kim Jong Il's family, whatever. Most of us will not enjoy more than one hundred anniversaries of our Declaration of Independence, so we should take our scant opportunities and make something of them. The candles on America's birthday cake might explode violently each and every time, but we should continue to salute at each scant opportunity.
